The Old Glory 4th of July Parade truly began very casually in the 50’s as the “Character Boat Parade.” As the years passed, the Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce took the helm and built her into a grand parade. Today the American Legion Yacht Club hosts the boat parade.
This year the American Legion, Newport Harbor Post 291, 15th St., Balboa Peninsula, celebrates its 82nd year, with over 2,500+ members is the largest post in California and the only one in the world that has a yacht club. Everyone involved has had a taste of serving their country, whether it is directly or through families.
The All Day Gala at the American Legion Post 291 begins at 7:00am – 11:00 am with volunteers preparing a fine Pancake Breakfast, $10.00, raffles, lunch 12- 5 pm, $10.00 and dinner available. In addition, watch the Old Glory Boat parade as it cruises by the American Legion during the festivities.

Sweepstakes Winners for 2005: Balboa Island's Patio Chair Drill Team. |
One of the best kept secrets of 4th of July events is the annual Patriotic boat parade. Sponsored by the local American Legion Post, 291. This has been a annual event year after year. with nearly 100 entries, from clipper ships to small watercraft, each are decorated and paraded throughout the harbor for the enjoyment of all the harbor residents and their guests. This year enjoyed over 88 entries. |
On the Water...
From George Washington in a kayak to a Mississippi riverboat adorned with American flags. However, the surprise of the year was a little known entry, "Moonshine" by Pat and Meridee Banas featuring Balboa Island's very own Patio Chair Drill Team which took the Grand prize, the Sweepstakes trophy. Winner's of the Spirit Trophy last year on a different vessel, the Patio Drill Team are no strangers to victory. They toiled tirelessly for 4 hours entertaining the crowd with their patio chair routine timed with patriotic music. In addition, some rumored that Arnold Schwarzenegger himself was on the boat taunting the public to join the patio chair team by lifting their chairs on the loud speaker, but no one is willing to confirm the Governor's presence.
With thousands of onlookers, the boats entertain the crowd with the themed decorations, music, and in the case of this year's Sweepstakes winners, Live entertainment.
At The Awards Banquet
At the banquet, the team waited silently as each of the 16 trophys were handed out. One by one, as each trophy was handed out, their hearts grew dimmer. When the previous year's trophy, the spirit award was handed out to another entry team, the Patio Chair team thought that their chances were done. However, the final honor, when announced, was received in disbelief - needless to say the Balboa Team erupted!
Congratulations team!
So next time your strapped for a destination for the Fourth of July, consider Balboa Island and watch the American Legion Boat Parade.
